Liz Taylor is not typically appearing among the “famous Martini drinkers” (a crew dominated by men I have to say), but some research shows that she used to order a Martini as soon as she arrived on set. What Martini would that be, for a lady who was synonymous with glamour, elegance and romance? It seems her favourite was indeed a chocolate martini, that she supposedly invented together with friend and co-star Rock Hudson in a fun round of experimentation one evening while filming the movie “Giant”. The couple had vodka martinis and also some chocolate syrup on hand, so they decided to put the two together: reportedly, they loved the results but had stomachaches the next day…
Even if mixology experts today doubt that Taylor and Hudson were the first to have this idea, as chocolate plus your favorite cocktail isn’t too strange when you’re looking for something a little indulgent, still the Hollywood icons were definitely the earliest and most famous chocolatini fans, and that helped put the drink on the map.
Today, the chocotini is a rather popular dessert cocktail with the following recipe: Vodka, chocolate liqueur (Crème de Cacao), coffee liqueur and chocolate syrup for drizzling inside the glass, and is celebrated in Hollywood bars to honor the actress and support the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
