Throughout my long and joyful barfly career, when I am in a new city for two nights I try to visit at least two bars, to get an understanding of the local “bar scene”. Well, not in Bangalore: the SOKA bar was so good that I just went there two evenings in a row. The reasons are many and reflect the golden rules of what a good bar should be.
First, the quality of the drinks. Both my classic Martini and the signature Pi Pi Martini (Indian gin, jujube-pickled brine, dry vermouth, very delicate and balanced) were simply perfect, as well as the other drinks I tried from their menu. One could say drinks are relatively expensive, but worth every Rupia. And, importantly, they can be paired with delicious mini plates (try the fried chicken and you will thank me).
Second, the athmosphere. The SOKA is relatively small, with low lights and cool music, and with a massive lamp over the central “social table”, that moves every time somebody touches it. Waiters, that are indeed bartenders, welcome and guide you in a very unintrusive way, and in case you are alone like I was they devote time to chatting with you as bestfriends.
Third, the “feel good” switch. Even if the SOKA is clearly a high-end place for Bangalore, it is so informal and welcoming that when you get in it sort of switches on your positive vibes, resonating with how you feel in that moment. You can feel the human touch of Avinash Kapoli, the bar master, as well as of all people working there. One moment the place is quiet, then the music changes and the places warms up, then back to tranquility, chenging as the night moves on.
So, if you happen to be in Bangalore you know where to go, and I bet you will go back on the follwing night 🙂 Classic Martini rate: 9.
