Bar Boon, Gyeongju, South Korea

If you are visiting Gyeongju, the old capital of the Silla kingdom of South Korea, after some walking, shopping and foot massaging (don’t miss that), you’ll surely need a drink. The place is quiote touristic and you’ll find many bars where to drink like a local, whick means whisky highballs and Soju, but if you want a cocktail bar with a nice international flavour the Bar Boon is where you want to go. Hidden in Hwangnam Market, this small and intimate bar is full of character, with a long wooden counter on the ground floor and a cozy seating area upstairs. The bar was created by bartender Jay Choi, who worked in San Diego before returning to Korea, and offers international cocktail with a local twist given by the precious Korean herbs, spices, and flavours that twist every drink. or example their Gin & Tonic is prepared with an homemade wonderfully balanced tonic water with some local spices. Interestingly, the house Martini is crafted with both dry and sweet vermouth, giving a very round taste. Staff is super welcoming, speaks good English (definitely a plus in Korea), and is ready to tell you the story behind every drink. In short: one of those places where you can spend a whole night with a smile. Classic Martini rate: 7.
